Description:
Porsche are celebrating something of a milestone at the moment, with the fanfare sounding marking 70 years at their home address in Zuffenhausen. Zuffenhausen has developed into so much more than a centre for production for Porsche, the area has become a landscape steeped in tradition and history charting the rises and falls of one of the worlds most loved car manufacturers. Over a million Porsche sports cars have been built in Zuffenhausen in Stuttgart since 1950. To celebrate this milestone a new exhibition has been opened at the Porsche Museum, this will continue through until the 9th of May.

After moving to Zuffenhausen many famous milestones were reached by Porsche, initially the car destined to become the VW Beetle was developed here followed by the Type 64, a vehicle considered by many to be the direct inspiration for many famous Porsche sports cars that are still in production to this day. After World War II the US military occupied the Zuffenhausen plant, however when they moved out in 1949 Porsche once again took over the famous site and continued to produce award winning vehicles. Gradually over the years the Zuffenhausen plant was expanded and began to occupy more and more of the surrounding buildings and scenery and it became a true automotive village.

By 1956 the 10,000th Porsche 356 to be produced left the Zuffenhausen plant and this marked even further expansion and the development of a new plant bringing the total up to three for Porsche. The company also expanded financially and began to acquire new enterprises to add to their business portfolio, such as the Reutter Coachbuilding and Body Construction Company. The 1,000 strong workforce all came to work at the Porsche plants in Zuffenhausen expanding the operation further, and the success of the 911 series assured the future of the site.

Plans for the future include a new ecological paint shop in 2011, and whilst many of the modern Zuffenhausen plant buildings bear little resemblance to the structures that classic vehicles were produced in there is no denying that they represent a modern, technologically sound construction area that will continue for many years into the future thanks to Porsche staying true to their roots and producing stunning vehicles that offer an incredible driving experience.

The Porsche Museum is a new addition to the Zuffenhausen site, it was first opened at the beginning of 2009 and it currently houses 80 historical vehicles and a series of exhibits charting the history of Porsche. It is considered an outstanding highlight in culture and architecture and is a must visit destination if you are a lover of Porsche cars or are in the Stuttgart area.
